35mm Slide Transparency Scanning Service

We scan any type of mounted slide all the same price including, 35mm, 126, 127, 110, negative, positive, monochrome, glass, plastic or card.

(Glass mounted charged differently, see below*)

We use professional dedicated slide scanners with the latest technology NOT domestic home scanners that you see many of our competitors use.

Every slide is scanned in High Definition and then fully adjusted by hand ‘by a human’ in Photoshop

inhand

We have modified our slide scanners to adapt to our system and run a bespoke software setup that only us at Mr Scan use, we have designed it in house and nobody else uses it. This gives us a superior slide scan producing what some photography experts have called the best quality scan possible from a slide.

We currently have 14 dedicated slide scanners in our studio with an investment of over £80,000 on just slide scanning equipment.

Glass Mounted/ Metal based Slides

These are bespoke custom made glass mounted film similar size to standard slides but much wider. They consist of two pieces of glass with the film between them and the edges taped with masking or similar tape. These are not classified as standard mounted slides and are custom made and not supplied by a standard slide manufacture, they do not fit in our scanning rig. However we can scan them using our high resolution flatbed scanner, this take much longer and they are charged at a different rate.

Individual Custom Slide Scanning

This is a custom service where each slide is individually scanned on our system with customised colour, contrast, gamma etc adjustments made during the process. The slide is scanned up to 16 times to get the best result and can take up to 40 minutes to complete each scan. Once scanned the image is manually restored using Adobe Photoshop and our Loupedesk studio (Left) – This service will also give you an exact order of your slides.

Important points regarding our slide scanning service

Please make sure that you use protective material to protect your films in the post. We will re-use your original packaging to return your films to you, this saves you additional packaging costs and is more environmentally friendly. These are your films so using the best protective material possible is advised.

“No tissue as this causes debris on the film”

Yes we know its a lot to read but with slide scanning there are so many variants and questions

  • We can scan Negatives, Positives and Monochrome 35mm mounted slides.
  • Any type of mounted slide can be scanned, card, plastic or metal.
  • 127, 126 and 110 sized slides may be slightly cropped in the corners due to the way our scanners operate.
  • Scanning in Bulk – We scan in bulk groups of slides up to 100 at a time, we use multiply scanners on larger projects with our standard scanner settings to give the best overall result , setting such as dust removal, cropping, colour correction, contrast, edge enhancement and sharpness are set up automatically to give the best result overall for the set of slides being scanned.
  • Cropping – Our scanners will look at each image for a suitable crop area, if the mount is not straight then the image will be slightly more cropped. Slides are also manually cropped by our image technicians where required to eliminate the frame and produce a better quality image. Image sizes will vary from image to image.  If you wish to have a full frame including the frame (which will be black) then please let us know prior to scanning, this can not be requested after scanning has been done. Full frame scans will have much less colour and brightness auto adjustment due to the amount of black in the full frame, customers can then crop their own images and post adjust colour and brightness levels.
  • Un-mounted or Damaged mounts – We offer an additional service for slides which are no longer in their mounts. This charge covers the re-mounting your slides in a temporary slides mount and removing them after scanning – If your slides are mounted in very poor condition mounts then this charge may also apply if we can not scan your slide in its existing mount. Slides that are slightly damaged or bent will be repaired usually by a staple along the sides or tape depending on the type of slide.
  • Adjustments – Each slide scan will be manually adjusted where required to obtain the best possible digital image, (colour correction/contrast/dust removal/exposure) this is of course in our personal opinion of what the image should look like with our years of experience however we are more than happy to supply images without any adjustments. In our opinion its best leave this to the experts. Just let us know prior to your order if you require pre adjusted image.
  • Special requirements – Sometimes when scanning certain slides such as artwork or older types of film different settings are required to give better results where possible, if you think your slides may need special settings we always recommend sending some in for a free sample so we can then discuss your requirements, options such as RAW and un-colour corrected images can be supplied instead. These requirements need to be discussed prior to sending in any orders. Written special requirements must be included in your package paperwork and not just via email or phone call.
  • Glass Mounted slides – If you want the best quality scanned image it is best that we scan slides without their glass protection, our scanners do scan very well with these type of mounted slides but usually best with it removed as there will be much less dust and focusing will be much sharper. If you wish to have your slides scanned without glass/sleeves then you need to remove the glass before sending them to us, we can not remove and remount the glass as part of our service. Any glass slides that are cracked will also need the glass removed prior to sending as this will be picked up on scanning.
  • Quality of image – Please remember that your films/slides are most probably a few decades old so may have faded, collected dust or obtained scratch marks within this time. Our scanners and staff will offer the best possible picture available from the material provided however they will not always be able to provide a miracle modern day equivalent digital image as if it was taken yesterday.
  • Image Restore – Some images will still have scratch/debit marks which were not possible to remove with a standard digital scan, some will have colour faded due to UV exposure, so will have colour “blotches” due to fading or mould. If you experience any of these then we recommend using a digital image restore service, we do offer minor image restores however if the task is larger then we recommend a local company who can restore any digital image expertly, their prices range for £20+ per image, simply drop us an email with your requirements and we will let you know if its something we can do or if it will be needed to be passed on to our digital image restore professional. If in any doubt about our service then please use our “Try it for Free” service.
  • Image order/Grouping- Due to the way we scan slides and negatives we cannot guarantee any pre-set order or grouping of your slides, we will try stick to an obvious order where possible however there are many influences that can change this, for example with slide scanning we use multiple scanners on larger orders, this keeps the prices down and speeds up completion. Different types/sizes of slides may need to go through different scanners, some images may need to be scanned again due to dirt levels or scanning incorrectly. Some slides may need to have their mounts repaired or replaced due to being too weak to go through our scanners. We advise that the best way to put images in a particular order is to rename/re-order the images in digital format when you receive them back from us, It’s a lot easier when you can see the full image on your PC screen.   If you wish for your slides to be in an exact order then please use our individual scanning service above where each one in turn is removed from your box and replaced.
  • Returned order of originals – As noted above we use bulk process scanners so can not guarantee that we can keep your films is any particular order for their return, we will of course do the best we can to keep to any particular requests however with the way our scanners operate it may not always be possible. You slides may not be in the exact box location you sent them in.
  • Numbering – Images and folders are automatically numbered using our scanner system. If you wish for images or folders to be renamed we advise that you carry out this yourself once you receive your images back in digital format as you know the images better than anybody so can correctly name them.
  • Plastic sleeve albums – Sometimes when slides are stored in plastic sleeve albums it will not be possible to put the slides back in these albums, this is due to the plastic shrinking over time. In these cases slides will be returned in elastic bands.
  • Inverted Images – We will do the best we can to scan the slide the correct way but we can not guarantee this will be correct. Many of the old slide producers used to vary which way they fitted slide film in its mounts, we have found even companies such as Kodak can vary. If you need to ‘flip’ the images then we have provided a link to a free software package that can do this. click here for XNview flip program
  • *Dust removal can never be 100%, it’s all down to how the original material has been cared for and stored over the years, our process uses high end air compressors and top of the range software however without liquid cleaning the film it will never come out 100% dust free, some slides fair better than others. We do not offer a liquid clean of the film as this can damage the film. Most slides scanned come out very well with our dust removal technique. As with all dust removal systems the image will be slightly less sharp due to the process, if you do not require dust removal then please let us know, we always recommend dust removal as the quality loss is minimal.
  • Art Work –We can scan art work (Paintings, drawings) in slide format however scanning of art work can cause slight colour issues due to some pastel art being assumed as faded by our scanners and enhanced, art work photographed in art frames can also cause incorrect cropping of the inner frame.
