Prefer your photos without automatic colour correction?
Dust removal, Digital ROC colour correction can be switched off on request. Please let us know before scanning begins.
Our standard dust removal process uses compressed air before scanning to remove as much loose dust and debris as possible. Photo prints can hold a lot of static, so very small particles can still remain, particularly on older or darker photographs.
We do everything we can to minimise this before scanning and can also use digital correction afterwards to reduce the appearance of remaining dust and minor surface marks. However, we cannot guarantee that every image will be completely dust- or mark-free.

Photo Scanning FAQs
Can you scan old printed photographs to digital?
Yes. Mr Scan professionally scans old printed photographs into high-quality digital image files. Standard loose photographs are scanned at 600 DPI and can be supplied in JPG or TIFF format.
Can you scan photographs directly from photo albums?
Yes. If photographs are stuck in an album or cannot be safely removed without causing damage, we can scan them directly from the album. This takes more time than scanning loose photographs, so our album scanning service is charged at a different rate.
Should I remove photographs from albums before sending them?
Where possible, yes. Loose photographs are quicker and easier to scan and normally give the best results. However, if a photograph is firmly stuck down or removing it could cause damage, please leave it in the album and use our photo scanning from album service.
Can you scan photographs from sleeve albums?
Yes. We can scan photographs from albums where the photos can be easily removed from individual sleeves. We have a separate service specifically for removable sleeve albums.
Can you scan card-mounted or glass-mounted photographs?
Yes. Photographs mounted onto card, still carrying thick card or adhesive on the back, or mounted behind glass can be scanned using our mounted-photo scanning service. If a frame itself can be safely removed, we recommend removing the outer frame before sending it.
Will photos scanned directly from an album be as sharp as loose photographs?
Usually they scan very well, but photographs close to a thick album spine can sometimes sit slightly away from the scanner surface and may have a small area that is not perfectly in focus. If maximum sharpness is essential, removing the photograph from the album is the best option where this can be done safely.
Can you scan through the clear plastic covering on old photo albums?
Yes. If an album has a clear film covering the photographs, we can normally scan through it. In some cases the covering may be slightly visible in the finished image and it can also attract additional dust.
Are photographs in an album supplied as separate digital images?
Yes. Each photograph is scanned individually and supplied as a separate digital image. If photographs overlap each other in the album, the resulting scan may include part of the overlapping photograph or be cropped according to the album layout.
What resolution are printed photographs scanned at?
Our standard photo scanning service scans photographs at 600 DPI. The final pixel dimensions and file size depend on the physical size of the original photograph.
Should I choose JPG or TIFF for photo scanning?
JPG is ideal for most family photo collections, everyday viewing, sharing and printing. TIFF is a larger lossless format and is generally preferred for long-term archiving, further image editing or customers who want maximum flexibility.
Do you clean photographs before scanning?
We use compressed air before scanning to remove as much loose dust and debris as possible. Photo prints can hold static and attract very fine dust, so completely dust-free scans cannot always be guaranteed, particularly with older or darker photographs.
Can you repair scratches, marks or damaged photographs?
Minor marks may be reduced during our normal scanning process. For photographs requiring more detailed repair, we also offer a photo restoration service where damage, scratches and other defects can be manually repaired in Photoshop.
Can you scan Polaroid photographs?
Yes. Polaroid prints can be scanned using our photo scanning service, including prints that require individual handling because of their format or mounting.
Can you scan large collections of family photographs?
Yes. We regularly scan large family photo collections and archives, from smaller batches to many thousands of photographs. Quantity pricing is available for larger collections.
Can you keep my photographs in exactly the same order?
We will do our best to keep photographs grouped together, but exact image order cannot be guaranteed because larger photo orders may be processed across multiple scanners. Small groups can be supplied in separate folders when the additional grouping service is selected.
Can I post my photographs to you from anywhere in the UK?
Yes. We accept photo scanning orders from customers throughout the UK. Local customers can also arrange a drop-off at our Farnham, Surrey studio.
*Scanning from Photo Albums/Damaged or glue mounted photos
Where possible, we ask customers to remove photographs from albums before sending them to us. If a photograph cannot be removed safely without risking damage, we can scan it directly from the album.
Scanning photographs directly from albums takes considerably more time, so this service is charged at the album-scanning rate shown above.
This service also applies to photographs mounted on card, previously mounted photographs that still have thick card, glue or tape attached to the back, and photographs that cannot lie flat on the scanner.
Focusing – Photographs positioned close to a thick album spine can occasionally sit slightly above the scanner surface, which may cause a small area of the image to appear out of focus. We see this on approximately 3–4% of photographs scanned directly from albums. The only way to guarantee completely flat scanning is to remove or carefully cut the photograph from the album, which is entirely the customer’s choice.
If you receive your digital images and would like us to re-scan a photograph because of an album-related focus issue, simply remove the photograph from the album where possible and return it to us. We will normally re-scan it free of charge, at Mr Scan’s discretion.
If an album has a clear plastic or film covering over the photographs, we will normally scan through it. The covering may occasionally be slightly visible in the finished scan and can also attract additional dust particles.
Each photograph is scanned and supplied as a separate digital image.
Where photographs overlap in an album, the scan may either be cropped around the visible photograph or include part of the overlapping image, depending on the album layout.
Artwork can be scanned using our photo scanning service, but we cannot guarantee an exact colour match because scanners reproduce pencil, paint and other artistic materials differently from photographic prints.
Some albums are several decades old and may already be fragile. We will always handle them with care and do our best to preserve their original condition, but we cannot accept responsibility for deterioration or failure of aged bindings, pages or adhesives during normal handling.
Card-mounted and glass-mounted photographs are also covered by our mounted-photo scanning service.
Image order and Grouping – We are sorry it is not possible guarantee any particular order or groups. With printed photographs we use multiple scanners where photo order sequences are not possible. We will do all we can to group together. If photos are grouped in small groups less than 25 then there is an additional image grouping charge per group folder.
