APS Film Scanning FAQs

Can you convert old APS film to digital?

Yes. Mr Scan converts processed APS (Advanced Photo System) film cartridges into high-resolution digital images using dedicated professional APS film scanners. Your photographs can be supplied as JPG or TIFF files.

Do you scan Kodak Advantix APS film?

Yes. We scan Kodak Advantix as well as other APS film brands including Fujifilm Nexia and Agfa APS cartridges. APS was produced by several manufacturers, but the cartridges use the same Advanced Photo System format.

Does my APS film need to be developed before scanning?

Yes. APS film must already have been processed or developed before we can scan it. We provide APS film scanning and digital conversion rather than photographic film developing.

How can I tell whether an APS cartridge has been processed?

APS cartridges have symbols on the side showing the film status. A square symbol normally indicates that the film has been fully processed. If you are unsure, please check the APS guide on this page before sending your cartridges.

Do you scan 15, 25 and 40 exposure APS cartridges?

Yes. We scan the standard APS cartridge sizes including 15, 25 and 40 exposure films. Our APS service is priced per cartridge rather than per individual photograph.

What resolution do you scan APS film at?

Our APS film is scanned at up to 4000 dpi, producing high-resolution digital images suitable for viewing, archiving, sharing and printing.

Should I choose JPG or TIFF for APS scanning?

JPG is suitable for most customers and produces smaller files that are easy to view, share and print. TIFF produces larger lossless files and is normally preferred for archiving, professional editing or customers who want maximum flexibility.

Do you remove dust and scratches from APS film?

Our APS scanning process uses Digital ICE technology where suitable to help reduce dust and surface defects. We also use colour, grain, contrast and exposure correction as part of our professional scanning workflow.

Can you recover the date each APS photograph was taken?

No. Although APS film contains magnetic information used by compatible equipment, our scanning service cannot reliably retrieve the original date that each photograph was taken.

Do you remove the APS film from the cartridge?

APS film is designed to remain protected inside its cartridge. We use dedicated APS scanning equipment designed specifically for this format, avoiding the need for customers to open or handle the film themselves.

Can I scan APS film myself at home?

APS film is more difficult to scan than standard 35mm negatives because the film is stored inside a cartridge and the frames are smaller. Older consumer APS scanners are now difficult to obtain, so professional APS scanning is usually the safest and easiest option.

How will I receive my digital APS photographs?

Your finished digital images can be supplied by secure download, USB memory stick or other digital delivery options depending on the service you choose.

Can I send APS film to you from anywhere in the UK?

Yes. Mr Scan accepts APS film scanning orders from customers throughout the UK. You can send your cartridges to us by post, or local customers can arrange a drop-off at our Farnham studio.
