Why APS Film Fades – And Why You Should Digitise It Now

Why Some APS Films Fade – And Why Digitising Them Now Matters More Than Ever

APS Scanning

APS film (Advanced Photo System) was hugely popular in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It promised easy loading, compact cartridges, and lower processing costs — making it very attractive to families and casual photographers.

But fast-forward 25–30 years, and we’re now seeing the long-term reality: some APS films simply haven’t stood the test of time.

At Mr Scan Ltd, we scan thousands of APS films every year, and while most scan beautifully, a noticeable number now show yellow colour casts, fading, or uneven colour balance — even when they’ve been stored well.

Real-World Example: When Cheaper Film Didn’t Age Well

Recently, a customer contacted us after reviewing their APS scans. The results were telling:

  • Kodak and Fujifilm APS (1997–1998): scanned very well, natural colours

  • Boots own-brand APS (1999–2000): strong yellow colour shift

  • All films stored together in good conditions

This is something we see regularly — and it highlights an important truth:

Not all APS film stocks were created equal.

APS was marketed as a budget-friendly alternative to 35mm, and many own-brand films were produced using lower-cost emulsions. At the time, saving a few pounds made perfect sense — but decades later, those cheaper chemical dyes are often the first to break down.

Most APS films are still great — but when deterioration happens, it’s usually down to the film stock itself, not the scanning process.

Why APS Film Is Prone to Colour Fading

APS negatives are smaller and thinner than 35mm film, which makes them more vulnerable to chemical change over time. Colour film relies on dye layers, and those dyes slowly degrade — even if the film has never been exposed to light since processing.

Common issues we now see include:

  • Yellow or magenta colour casts

  • Loss of contrast

  • Muted or “muddy” colours

  • Uneven fading across a single roll

Once these chemical changes occur, they cannot be reversed in the original film — they can only be corrected digitally after scanning, and even then only to a realistic degree.

Does Storage Make a Difference?

Yes — but only up to a point.

Good storage slows deterioration, it doesn’t stop it.

Best Storage Conditions for APS Film

If you still have APS cartridges at home, they should ideally be stored:

  • In a cool, dry, dark environment

  • Away from lofts, garages, and sheds

  • Inside acid-free sleeves or containers

  • At stable humidity (around 30–40%)

Even when stored perfectly, colour film continues to age chemically. That’s why we now say:

If it still looks good today — scan it now.

Why Digitising APS Film Is So Important

Digitising APS film is about preserving what remains, not waiting until it’s too late.

Key Benefits of Digitising APS Film Now

  • Stops further loss – once scanned, the digital image won’t degrade

  • Captures maximum detail – even from faded or damaged film

  • Allows digital colour correction where possible

  • Easy sharing & backups – no specialist equipment required

  • Future-proofs family memories

In many cases, customers also have original prints — and while prints can be scanned too, the best source is always the negative, as long as it’s captured before further fading occurs.

Why Professional APS Scanning Makes a Difference

APS film requires specialist handling and equipment. At Mr Scan Ltd, we:

  • Use dedicated APS-capable scanners

  • Capture at high resolution with careful colour management

  • Assess each roll individually — not batch-processed blindly

  • Apply sympathetic correction without over-processing

  • Return files via secure download or USB

We don’t oversell results — and we’re always honest when fading is due to the original film.

APS Film: A Snapshot of Its Time

APS was convenient, affordable, and innovative — but it was never designed for long-term archival life. Digital photography arrived quickly, and APS disappeared just as fast.

What remains today are the memories — birthdays, holidays, family moments — and those are worth preserving properly.

Your memories don’t have to fade just because the film is.
