APS Film Scanning – Important Information
At Mr Scan we are one of the UK’s leading APS film scanning specialists, offering a truly professional service using dedicated APS film scanners — never cheap domestic units that can risk damaging your film.
We can scan any previously processed APS film (i.e. films where photos have already been developed). We assume all APS films sent to us have been processed.
We digitise all formats, including APS negative, positive, and monochrome (B&W) film.
Why Choose Our APS Film Scanning Service?
-
All roll sizes scanned at one fixed price – whether 15, 25 or 40 exposures.
-
Dedicated APS film scanners deliver superior quality compared to domestic scanners used by many competitors.
-
Our equipment automatically reads the DX code, ensuring correct frame numbers and accurate colour correction for each image.
(Note: No APS scanner can retrieve extra data such as the date of the photo.) -
Anti-static cleaning brushes remove dust before scanning, and Digital ICE™ Technology identifies and removes surface defects automatically.
-
We offer multiple scanning resolutions, giving flexibility for HD digital archiving, printing, or professional use.
-
Our high-speed, purpose-built scanning workflow ensures fast turnaround and outstanding results.
-
Old analogue APS images are upscaled to high-definition digital files for the best possible quality.
All final image adjustments are completed using our LoupeDesk Photoshop Suite, ensuring clean, vibrant and accurate results.
How to Scan APS Film (Advanced Photo System Film)
APS film (Advanced Photo System), also known as Advantix film, was popular in the 1990s and early 2000s but is now obsolete. Because APS film is stored inside a cartridge and uses a magnetic data layer, it requires specialist professional scanning equipment to safely extract the images at high resolution without damaging the film.
At Mr Scan Ltd, we use dedicated professional APS film scanners designed specifically for this format. Unlike domestic flatbed or home film scanners, professional APS scanning systems can correctly read the film orientation, exposure data, and frame positioning — ensuring the highest possible image quality.
Why APS Film Is Difficult to Scan
APS film cannot simply be opened and placed into a standard negative scanner. Key challenges include:
-
Film is sealed inside a cartridge
-
Frames are smaller than 35mm film
-
Magnetic IX data must be read correctly
-
Many home scanners cannot physically accept APS cartridges
-
Opening cartridges incorrectly can permanently damage film
For best results, APS film should always be scanned using dedicated APS film scanning hardware operated by experienced technicians.
Professional APS Film Scanning Process
Our professional APS scanning workflow is designed to protect your originals while delivering maximum quality:
-
APS cartridges are inspected and logged into our tracking system
-
Film is scanned using professional dedicated APS scanners
-
Images are colour corrected and density balanced
-
Files are output to high resolution JPEG or TIFF formats
-
Originals are safely returned with your digital files
This process ensures your APS photos are preserved digitally for future generations.
Can You Scan APS Film at Home?
While some older consumer scanners claimed APS compatibility, most are now discontinued and provide limited quality. Home scanning attempts can result in:
-
Soft or low-resolution images
-
Incorrect colours
-
Cropped or misaligned frames
-
Risk of damaging irreplaceable film
Professional APS scanning delivers significantly better results, especially for archiving family memories.
