Important Information About Our Negative Film Scanning Service

At Mr Scan, we want to make sure you get the best results from your negatives. Please take a moment to read the information below before sending your films to us.

Film Strips & Single Images

  • We scan full film strips only – not partial strips.
  • Each frame on a strip is delivered as a separate digital file.
  • Each strip must contain a minimum of two frames.
  • Single cut negatives can be scanned on specialist equipment (outside bulk rates) and are charged at a higher per-image rate.
  • Please contact us before sending single images. Single cuts submitted under the bulk service will be returned unscanned.

Film Quality & Colour Fading

Negatives naturally fade and discolour over time. Some brands age better than others — in our experience, Kodak stock typically retains colour well. Our scanners are calibrated to extract the best possible result for each film type, but outcomes vary by age, storage, and condition.

Cutting & Film Length

  • We don’t recommend cutting negatives. If you do, ensure each strip has two frames or more to use our standard process.
  • We scan all frames received. We can’t accept selective frame lists; everything supplied will be scanned.

Film Types

We scan Colour, Black & White (Monochrome) and Positive (Reversal) 35mm negatives — all at the same price.

Counting & Pricing

  • Charges are per image, not per strip.
  • We do not pre-count images.
  • Any additional frames discovered are invoiced; any overpayments are refunded.

Film Verification

Please ensure the films you send match the service ordered. Variations are adjusted according to our current price list. If unsure, visit our Film Guide.

Processing

All film must be processed/developed prior to scanning. We don’t offer darkroom processing.

Image Order & Grouping

  • We aim to maintain the order supplied, but exact sequencing isn’t guaranteed (re-scans for dust or exposure can affect order).
  • Negatives supplied in good order usually scan in good order.
  • We recommend renaming/re-ordering digitally once you receive your files.
  • Groups under 25 images may incur an additional grouping charge per folder.

Return of Originals

We’ll return films as close to the supplied order as possible, but our bulk workflow means exact order cannot always be guaranteed.

Quantity Variations

Differences between ordered and scanned quantities are invoiced or refunded before dispatch.

Film Mounts & Protection

Please remove stickers, labels, or mounts from negatives. Additional handling fees may apply if we need to remove these. Supply films in sleeves or loose.

Image Numbering & Folder Names

  • Images are auto-numbered by our scanner system.
  • We recommend you rename files after delivery for perfect accuracy.
  • If you need us to rename folders or images, this must be pre-arranged and will incur a surcharge.
  • Physical envelopes are labelled to match your digital folder numbers for easy cross-reference.

Infrared (IR) Film

We can scan IR film. Files are delivered in IR without colour correction.

File Specifications & Trial Scans

If you require exact resolutions, file sizes or colour spaces, please use our Free Trial Service first. Once an order is completed, output settings cannot be changed.

DX Codes

DX codes may be unreadable due to age, dirt or cutting. Where available we’ll use the DX image ID; otherwise images are auto-numbered.

Dust & Dirt on Film

We avoid touching film and use compressed air plus Digital ICE (where supported) to reduce dust and scratches. Complete dust removal isn’t possible. Monochrome film doesn’t support Digital ICE, so minor marks may remain.

Dust removal can never be 100%. Our workflow offers excellent results, though a minimal sharpness trade-off is normal. If you prefer scans without dust removal, please tell us before we start.
